Session One: The global ATM system in 2020 - what will the world really need?
This session set the scene for the discussions to follow. The speakers set out their personal view of how the ATM system will need to look in 2020 to meet traffic, environmental and financial challenges. In particular they looked at the key technologies that are in operation; future safety, efficiency, cost effectiveness and environmental performance metrics; future financial models for ANSPs, the role of technology suppliers, the role of regulators and governments and the automation of operations in 2020 as well as potential industrial relations and aircraft equipage.

Session Two: Are we on track to deliver the required ATM performance?
The industry experts in this session examined the status of current ATM programmes to meet the aviation industry’s requirements of 2020 and in particular SESAR, NextGen and CARATS. They identified the obstacles that they face and the different players’ views. They assessed the different implementation strategies and discussed their feasibility by looking at each industry sector’s role and their respective cost-benefit analyses.

Session Three: Is sovereignty a major obstacle to a truly global ATM system?

Industry leaders from across the globe assessed how to avoid sovereignty issues hindering the implementation of ATM programmes and stopping the implementation of a global ATM system.

Session Five: How should we change the culture of ATM?
To reach the goals set by ATM programmes and the vision of the future, change is needed throughout the industry both with civil and military stakeholders. In this session, a selection of industry as well as non-industry experts shared their views on the most effective ways of making this much-needed change happen.

Session Seven: Dealing with disruption: The ATM lessons of hurricane Irene and other European winter events
In August 2011 the eastern seaboard of the USA and the Caribbean was lashed by Hurricane Irene, which shut airports and closed down the aviation system in one of the busiest sectors in North America. A panel made up of those involved in dealing with Hurricane Irene and those in Europe who have managed major disruption caused by unexpected weather events discussed.

Session Eight: New safety and efficiency improvement programmes from dynamic ATM markets

Some of the most innovative ATM systems and procedures are being introduced in parts of the world which face steep rises in traffic growth. New fuel-saving, safety-improving programmes are being trialled in areas of the world where there is a need to introduce new technology to greenfield sites, not merely to update legacy systems. This session gave an overview of some of the more important programmes underway.
